Caramelized Onion Rye Toast

Recipe By: DeeperLivingEats

Description

With a little bit of love and patience you can transform the simple yellow onion into a caramelized jammy umami packed topping for the perfect toast. Toasty rye bread gets a thick smear of Icelandic Provisions Whole Milk Plain Skyr to create a delicious creamy base for those caramelized onions.

Finish your toast with a sprinkle of flaky salt and enjoy!

Serves 2

Ingredients
1
Large Yellow Onion
peeled, halved, and then sliced into 1/4 inch slices
1 tbsp
Canola Oil
1/4 tsp
Kosher salt
Water as needed
Sliced Rye Bread
1/3 cup
Icelandic Provisions Whole Milk Plain Skyr
Flaky Sea Salt
to serve
Recipe
Step 1:
Heat the canola oil over medium heat in a large pan. Once the oil is warm, add the onions and spread them evenly across the pan. Let the onions turn translucent and give them a gentle toss. Add salt and give them a mix.
Step 2:
Once the oil is warm, add the onions and spread them evenly across the pan. Let the onions turn translucent and give them a gentle toss. Add salt and give them a mix.
Step 3:
Reduce the heat to low and stir every 2-3 minutes to prevent burning and sticking. The onions should look blonde after 10 minutes and more golden brown after 15 minutes, if any spot starts to look dry and bare, add a touch of water to prevent burning. Continue stirring and cook until the onions are slightly crisp on the edges and are warm golden brown. Patience is key!
Step 4:
Once the onions are caramelized to your liking, set them aside.
Step 5:
Pan toast the rye bread with a touch of oil until the toast is nice and crispy.
Step 6:
Spread plain skyr generously on each slice of warm toast.
Step 7:
Spread the caramelized onions on top and top with flaky salt. Enjoy!
